Churchwarden's Jottings
(January 19, 2014)Churchwarden's Jottings
I would like to start by saying
a big thank you to all of the people who attended this year's Words and Music. "The best yet" many said. In particular, thanks to Sarah Hales for organising the voices and the Devon Waites choir, the kind souls who provided mince pies and Linda Baker for providing the delicious mulled wine. This all resulted in a grand fundraising total of just over £1100 and enables us to add additional monies to our "flush fund".
Flag Pole
Some of the more observant amongst you will have noticed
that the Church flag pole seems to be taking a rest! ie is lying down
on top of the tower. Having only recently been reinstalled following
the reroofing of the tower it failed to withstand the force of the
gales over Christmas and the new year. The force of the wind against
the flag and flag pole pulled out some of the stone masonry from the
turret of the tower. We are waiting for our church architect to advise
on the best means of remedying the situation but the aim is to have the flag pole reerected as soon as possible so that we can have our flag flying form the top of the Church.
Monthly Coffee Mornings
Our first coffee morning of 2014 was on 16th January. We saw 30 people in attendance. An excellent start to the New Year. Don't forget it's from 10am - 12 noon. Do pop in for a chat and a piece of cake. Bring a friend, bring the children. Its a great way to spend an hour or two once a month. The next get together is Thursday 13th February.
Hope to see you there. Transport can be organised.
Lent Lunches
Yes it is that time of year again! The first lunch is on 10th March in the Kenn Centre, 12.30pm - 2pm and then for the next 4 Mondays.
Why not get involved? If you like cooking (there are so many cookery shows on the TV that this is clearly becoming an evermore popular past time) do volunteer your services. A soup or pudding is required. Team up with two or three of your friends. Again, this is a great social occasion whilst also raising funds for a very worthwhile cause. This year that cause is Water Aid. If you are at all interested in helping, then do please give Linda Baker a call on 01392 833521 or Simon Preece on 01392 832462.
Village Fete
Yes, it's happening again this year! Let's hope for kind weather or even better still the glorious sunshine that we enjoyed at the last fete. A change of venue for 2014, we will be in the blacksmith's meadow (aka the charter field!) by kind permission of Bruce Slade . Please put the date in your diaries and calendars - Saturday 17th May.
All help gratefully appreciated. If you are able to get involved or can volunteer time on the day then please call this year's fete maestro Mervyn Hosking on 01392 832896. Keep reading Haldon Views for more information.
