CHURCHWARDEN’S JOTTINGS

(July 20, 2015)

Picnic in the Park II

Just a few words to thank all of those involved in making picnic in the park such a successful evening. The cricket club for kindly letting us use their field; Linda and Michael Dorian for the use of the first parking area and Mervyn and Brenda Hosking for the use of the overflow parking area; Dom Jinks for organising the PA system; Paul Ryecroft for organising the Brass ensemble; and Mervyn Hosking for coordinating the whole thing.

First prize for ticket sales must go to Helen Mortimer who also demonstrated her raffle ticket selling skills on the evening along with Yvonne. We also mustn’t forget the many people behind the scenes who helped with the parking and putting up and taking down, without you the event wouldn’t have happened.

Also thanks to all of you who came along to enjoy the  brass band and the Devon Rock Choir, particularly the gyrations of their leader Elle as she conducted!

An Answer to our Prayers

One of the hardest roles to fulfill on any PCC is that of secretary. Especially now that we are in the 21st century. It needs someone who has excellent keyboard and computer skills. Enter Ayesha Lovell who grew up in the village, has long standing links with St Andrews and is technologically very savvy. Ayesha welcome to the PCC.

Spending the Monies Raised

One of the things that Jeff Bassett and I are very keen on as custodians of the Church building, is continuing the ongoing maintenance and improvement programme that St Andrew’s has been following for a number of years. The bells, the main tower roof, the heating and the window restoration are past examples. Recently we have spent £2000 in restoring the front path stonework. As a consequence of our current quinquennial report (5 yearly Church MOT) we have now spent £2500 putting right the crenellations on the North side of the Church and the roves of the 2 side turrets.

Whilst on the topic of spending money, we have received quotes of circa £3000 to rectify the leaning wall in the Churchyard.

As you can see, unfortunately, no project ever seems to just cost a few pounds nowadays!!

Toilet Update

We have now been informed by The Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) that out application for consent to install toilets within the Church is due to be considered in September. Unfortunately, due to the number of applications submitted by other Churches in respect of time limited grant funding works, we  are having to wait a little longer than we would have hoped. Once we have sign off from the DAC , then our application goes forward to the Chancellor of the Consistory Court in London for consideration and (hopefully) approval. The wheels on such matters grind slowly on. I will keep you posted on progress.

Village Quiz

This event has turned out to an annual social and fun event. This year the quiz is to take place on Friday 9th October in the Kenn Centre. Interesting and different questions for John Wood, delivered by question master extraordinaire Kelvin Boot and at half time delicious hot Devon pasties.  Liquid refreshment to brought by your good selves. This all makes for a fantastic evening. Hope to see you there. Entry forms can be found in the August/September edition of Haldon Views.
